Cheap tires...

Postby max » Tue May 08, 2007 9:18 am

I bought my last set of tires at edgeracing.com for $70 a piece, but I think seth told me about a place in Germany that was even cheaper- Seth, if it was indeed you, can you remind me what the site was?

Wow, I bet those tires would last me 70k miles! Too bad I'd slide right off an auto-x course...

Well if you are going to go auto-x tire + cheap you only have a few options. Azenis 615s, Hankook RS2s, Kumho MX, General somethings that Jennifer was looking at, I'm not sure how they compare. Pick your poison.

I know my choices, I'm just looking for the best prices. Heck there are some even cheaper korean/japanese/whatever tires than kumho, falken, hakooks... like Federal, Nexen, Nangkang, Sumitomo, Fuzion... even some others that I haven't heard of before like "GT Radial" or "Matador"

we're talking stuff that's like $50 a tire. Maybe not as good as azenis, but damn... for that price, you could just have fun burning them up.

The tires I am running which I like. Is the General EXclaim UHP. And is very reasonably priced. at 66.00 for 205/50-16. the 195/50-15 are 55.00 each
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Exclaim+UHP
When brand new were a little mushy (maybe the release agent) not side wall, They have a very deep tread, but felt that way till about 30%worn. Now there great. They like it hot (from about 50F up) but that's easy to accomplish with a race start.

The deep tread is nice on the dirt roads and rain.

I don't rotate tires. I just use up the fronts and move the rears to the fronts and put the new ones on the back. This way (crazy thinking) I only have to buy 2 tires a season after I buy the 4 as a set. If I go to Town fair tire they will price match and free alignment. So for around 140.00 for a pair of tires mounted and balanced with a front end alignment. I'm pretty happy. The rears are still looking brand new. The fronts will last till the end of summer.

Benjamin bought the Kumho mx's in a 205/50-15 and paid good money for them 79.00 + shipping. I would say I actually like the General better. Though I'm running the larger size. The sectional height is about the same and so is the rim width. So, who knows.

Maybe next week we can swap tires and I can give them a run for the money. Benjamin doesnt' like to drive my car as much. So, I'm sure he would like the chance to take my tires for a ride.

If this happens I post my findings.

Yeah I'd say swap the tires and see what happens. It could just be your car that you like driving around better. 8) I'd think MXs would have a much stiffer sidewall and much stickier compound at half the treadwear rating. Let us know.

The price is not that bad for what kind of tire you are getting
