9-5 upgrades

Postby Sam » Thu May 17, 2007 11:39 am

Since i have found a job for the summer i think its time for some upgrades/repairs. The bushings in the rear are very noisy and the suspension is floaty likely due to smacking into downtown rochester's many potholes. Looking into a koni or bilstein setup. I'm also eyeing an lsd from abbott. Luke - would you be up for assisting on some of these installations?? Also wondering if the abbott diff is inferior to the quaife one as its significantly cheaper.

Last I checked i thought the Abbott one was a Quaiffe. They were running a deal on them a few months ago....around 500 British Pounds.

Have confirmed that the abbott part and the quaiffe are the same. Now where can i score an even better deal than the abbott one? $800 is less than 500 pound hmmm.

lso my car asks that you not hate her b235. All the girls made fun of her for her lager displacement in highschool.

bankers hours are like 8 - 4... with a long lunch and closed every other convenient time.

Is lager displacement the amount of beer you can drink? if so, you shouldn't be drinking while in high school.

just getting the trans out of a 9-5 is a fun job... Personally, I'd just toss in an Aero suspension. I did with my car, it's a vast improvement over the stock 9-5 suspension. Installing the LSD is at least a $1000 operation to have done if you bring them the trans already removed, not including buying the unit.

I hear its a 1000 just to have the case opened on those things.

Have a friend who rebuilt the transmission in his mr2 and installed an lsd. I'm sure he'd be willing to help out a bit on getting the transmission internals right. I do remember him saying that it took a lot of patience to get it right but that replacement transmission parts cost next to nothing as do the tools. The plan is to buy a used transmission that is toast and rebuild it.
why not go for it? The 9-5 cannot put down any power and mine is the lpt. My thought is that this would make the biggest difference of any upgrade even if it is the most work.

Have been hearing great things about Bilstein HDs on Aero Springs. I believe even the aero suspension is macpherson part. The layout of the strut internals is a bit different on the bilsteins and is more performance oriented. I pulled a photo from a thread on SC on ths. Image

The reason the piston size is so different is that Bilstein put the actual shock bits (fluid, valves, and so on) in the top with the rod in the shock body underneath. This is inverted compared to a normal MacPherson strut, but by doing it this way they're attaching the heaviest part of the shock directly to the body of the car, which lowers the unsprung weight and improves performance.

So how do the HD's work with the aero springs? I've got Eibach springs with HD's, and at high speeds it's kinda frighteningly underdamped. I've still got my aero springs and I'm thinking of swapping

Why would you buy another transmission?
