Saab engine RWD setup...parts

Postby Crazyswede » Tue Aug 27, 2013 4:23 pm

Is this the appropriate bellhousing to mate a Saab engine? I see its a vauxhall to borg warner T5

its funny I searched the web site for Saab and that page came up but I did not see the Saab engine listing until after you posted it just now. I have a rover chassis that needs to be finished at some point and I had considered a 2.3 turbo for a drive line but did not know an appropriate or you easy way of mating it to a transmission. Supposedly the t5 is not a very robust transmission. But I do not know if that's in relation to 400 horsepower v8 engines or just in general. There are several other transmissions that will bolt up to that bell housing

I had seen other people talking about using that bellhousing, but don't know anyone who ponied up and bought one to be certain.

I think it was Josh who brought the jeep to the convention.

Yeah, that's the one that's in the Saabler.

I had heard that the TR7 bellhousing worked too. You can probably find one of those for next to nothing...

Interesting, might be worth the $100 to try it?

There's another on the 'bay' for $48 but it looks different from the other TR7 bellhousings.

Though they look kind of different by comparison to the one that's known to fit.

It would depend on what block style we are talking about. I'd doubt a TR7 would fit any modern casting.. and then you'd need an adapter to a decent transmission from that point.

That company also makes SAAB/Vauxhall adapters that go to Ford transmissions.

So just so that I can understand, please correct me if I'm wrong.

with that bellhousing and enough body modification ( motor mounts relocation, transmission fitting etc) you could potentially use a let's say a ford Top loader in a B202 saab engine ? ( or any other manual gearbox that fits)

B234 & b204...the vertical engined from ng900 and 9000s etc. Pretty much any transmission could be adapted. Its not so much for putting in a c900 as for other projects.

What did the guy with the Jeep use?

I had thought about a Lotus 7 based kit car with a Saab turbo motor in it. Would probably go like a bat out of hell.

You may want to look into trying a T-56. 6 speed. Multiple shifter locations that go directly into the trans from the top. Very heavy duty gears. Significantly heavier trans than a T-5. Used in newer Mustangs, Vipers ect.
