hill climb 900 spg, duck tail or leave it off?

A fellow from New Zealand has posted on Saab Central about his hill climb car, 1 1987 900 SPG. He's tried to log on and register but since there have been problems I figured it would hurt to ask for him.

He has thought about getting rid of the "duck tail" and wondering if it's cosmetic or if it does generate down force. It's been a proverbial coons age since I've had a 900 but remember them as being sensitive to the tail being twitchy with a light fuel load. My vote was to leave it on since on a hill climb car, the weight of the tail is minimal and the gain may just give him a bit of an edge.

He'll be watching for your comments so thanks and sorry this site has become closed to all but a few since you folks are the real torch bearers, last of the real breed.

I have a S&R duck tail on my 900 hillclimber.

I believe it does help with the stability. And it looks pretty bitchin.

When my 86 900 had the stock 8v base model springs in it, it would waggle at highway speeds. I put the duck tail on, and the waggle was gone.

I'd use it. No real weight gain, potential for real aero gain.

If you know someone who wants to register, send a PM to Luke or Jordan and they should be able to manually register someone. It sucks about registration being turned off but that's because there are a bunch of jerks who go around spamming. Right now some a-hole just put up about 10 posts inviting everyone to a perverse webcam show. I think people know where to find that stuff if they're interested, no need to spam. o_O

I glued the duck tail back on using Carbond 940fc . It looks much more complete with it Id have to say.

Some photos of said vehicle . Im guessing it weighs a bit under 1000 kg now It certainly sits up on the springs which are shortened spgs. Once the cage is in it should sit down a little better . Just did 9000 brake conversion and added ducts to the corner of the lights .

I actually dig the 99 front end on the 900... the fit is surprisingly not that bad.

The rear bumper treatment is cool. looks like a gutted bumper skin bolted to the back?

Yeah. Weighs next to nothing . Mind you it will provide next to nothing in protection if I wrap the car round a strainer post after backing off mid corner ! Going to upsize the duct hoses one day .Cant see them being much use except on track days.

Installed IC sprayer with a little tank that lasts just over 1.5 minutes. Dremeled some fuel line to get a nice bunch of holes in a loop .

Ha, nice! Do you run the radiator fans to help pull air through the intercooler too?

Yes .Ive still got the old brass radiator too and with the t3 peaking at 25lbs things get a little warm. Seems okay for short runs but I cant imagine it holding up on something like Pikes peak!. Ha ha. The fan is manually switched .
