2.1L Head with 91mm pistons and Which cams, head gasket?

Postby Freecirc » Sat Apr 26, 2014 7:54 pm

Hey There fellow SAABers!

I am in the planning stages of a build for my SPG.
I will be running with a 2.1L head with T5 intake valves, and pauter connecting rods and 91mm piston heads.

I am curious if any of you have a suggestion for the head gasket. Since I will be running oversized piston heads, should I use the 2.1L head gasket?

Also, should I keep the stock 2.1L cams, or use the set of 1985 turbo cams that I found at the junk yard (specifically the exhaust cam)?

Thanks for your Help!

I'm not the most educated on this topic here but I say 85 t exhaust and 2.1 na intake.

With a 91mm piston, you should probably go with the 2.1 head gasket. I don't have an old 2.0 head gasket at hand to measure up, but I think 91mm might just clear the bore if the gasket is perfectly centered. I looked at this a while back and concluded that it was too close (or wouldn't clear at all...) and that I would go with the 2.1 gasket.

As I recall the 85 Exhaust cam is the same as all the other cams from other years. The 85 intake cam is different because of the intake design which is intended to help swirl the fuel. Putting an 85 exhaust cam in isnt going to do anything special for you other than that its a turbo cam.

OK, so it sounds like the consensus here is use the 2.1L head gasket and keep the 2.1L cams with the T5 intake valves. Excelllent! Thanks for your opinions Fellas!

if you are going to the trouble of putting the T5 valves in why not just put the whole t5 head on? You will need to mod the intake and the timing cover. Then just run the T5 valves

I'm pretty sure the 85 exhaust cam is the "hot cam" that adds a little bit of top end.

-Yeah, I have typical 2.0L turbo cams, but I grabbed the '85 cams for that very reason.

-Well, I already have the 2.1L Head, and don't want to have to fab anything for the build...

Im sure this has been discussed ad nauseum but isnt the t5 head a little better than the 2.1 due to its smoother pent roof design ?

newer design, better flowing, smaller diameter valve stems block flow less...etc.
