Thanks for all of the suggestions guys.

The grease method is intriguing. How do you retract the the slave cylinder once you get the ring in when it's full of grease? If I open the bleeder and try to squeeze the cylinder back, will I be able to squeeze it hard enough so the grease will come out the bleeder thus retracting the cylinder back?

Well I tried the grease method on an extra slave on the bench. I was able to push the piston back when I removed both fittings from the slave cylinder.
