Hi all,

The 86 i bought had some welding done to it, and in the trunk the welds were not painted or covered in anything, and have a rusty look to them. What are you supposed to cover/paint/slather on welds to keep them happy?

i'm tempted to spray some rustoleum on it, or grease it up, but i don't trust my instincts on this one. I like to bolt things together, not melt them together.

Also, weld-through primer is not a bad idea, but too late for that. After that, shoot it with self etching primer and top coat it with what ever sort of paint you want.

3M Fast and Firm sucks. Too many solvents and not enough elastomers means that it dries quickly, hardens, and cracks resulting in pathways for moisture. Their All-Around Autobody Sealant seems much better.
If you have rust on the welds I'd paint it [url]with http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator-28601.html[/url] then chose to topcoat if you wish.

If the rust is quite bad you can cook up a thick rust remover with some citric/phosphoric acid and cornstarch and paint that on. Otherwise rub down / wirebrush the rust.
Coat with a decent epoxy primer of the type suggested by Geoff. (I have a massive tin of Jotun Jotamastic 87 as my epoxy primer of choice).

You can also apply a decent brushable seam sealant on top of the epoxy.

Apply a topcoat.

I have to look closer, it looks to be some surface rust on the welds.
