removing 99 front rotors

Postby firedome » Wed Oct 08, 2014 4:32 pm

Have the typical 99/900 caliper stick issue, so redoing all the brakes completely, along with front end and CV rebuilds.

The FSM calls for a special SAAB factory puller with 4 extensions. Our '77s rotors are super rusty and are NOT about to come off easily - any tips?

Also the Meyhle (made in Germany) rotors we got for it look somewhat different, don't have the big groove around the side of the top near the stud face... ??

Consider switching over to 900 hubs allowing you easier access to brake rotors that are changeable without the puller. If you keep the 99 hubs then you will need to creat, borrow, find a puller...though you may be able to hammer rotors on and off...but I would not recommend that method as you may damage wheel bearings or rotors in the process.

It should also be noted that the wheel bearings for those hubs are completely unobtanium last I checked. They're some weird specification that doesn't cross over to anything, so since saab doesn't make em anymore, they're gone.

Already bought new calipers/pads/rotors for the 99 - ...so ... will they work with 900 hubs?
We're familiar with and have worked on C900 front brakes as Josh still has his '84 900T 8 valve and Bill still has (and drives) his '87 900.
I got rid of my red '87 900 2 dr hatchback around 1997.

Calipers are the same as long as its not an early 99. around 73 or 74 the brakes changed to the newer style of 99 which is like the 900.

It's a '77, so all good there... iirc the parts guys said that rotors also were in common with C900s up to like '87 (base model only after '86), hopefully this is true? I bought the parts over a year ago so not-returnable at this point.

If you go the 900 Hub and later wheel bearing route, you need to use 81-87 non vented hubs and rotors .Paul is correct about the early 75-80 front wheel bearing issue. The 75 to 80 front rotor is different than 81-87. The 75 to 1987 front calipers will work if you stick with non vented 81-87 rotors as will the pads you purchased. The 75-80 outer CV joint has a different part number than the 81-87 also. You may have to use 81up CV joints and axles. I would find some 81-87 front hubs complete with the steering knuckle and go from there.

I just looked in the barn and I have a set of hubs and steering knuckles off a driving 86 900 base car with non vented rotors on. I Don't think I will use these anymore. You are welcome to them as long as you pay the shipping.

You have to use your 99 axles with the 900 outer cv joints
