4 speed transmission shift forks

Hello, been a minute since I posed on here. I have a question about a 4 speed I am putting in a circle track car. Trans is a chain drive 4 speed, with the steel pinion housing. I am not rebuilding, just disassembled to check functionality before installing in the car. I noticed the “finger” on the shifter shaft that engaged the shift forks will over-travel past the 1-2 shift fork. I have a 5 speed apart on the bench, and the 1-2 fork has a stop machined into it so the finger will not overtravel past the fork. The 4 speed fork has no such stop. What is used to stop the travel of the shifter shaft on a 4 speed so it does not lose engagement with the shift forks? I am not sure if something is broken or a am missing something?

Ultimately, the guide in the bottom of the shifter assy limits the travel of the shift shaft.
