Mike,

The purported strong ones have 3 ribs inside sump part. But its not the ribs that make it strong, thats purely an indicator that the casting was the best process.

Heres one I have someday I will get around to building

to which 3 ribs are you referring? The 3 wide ones in the oil resevoir, the 3 triangular ones on the right or the 3 small ribs on the differential housing?

the 3 diagonal ones I think. Oddly, some of the gear-drive 4 speeds I have seen have those as well.

Not really odd, that is quite normal, most of the 870423 chillcast boxes i have come across are from 99's around 1975-1977 with cog primaries.
Sometimes a rogue box does turm up, it's from the early 99's around 1972, part number 870352, it looks identical to the later box, but it's not as good and you cannot fit the chillcast pinion housing to this box, because reverse gear on the pinion shaft will bottom out on the inside of the casing, it's just something you should be aware of.
