go to first unread option?

Postby matt » Wed Apr 02, 2008 3:51 pm

Some forums have a link at the top of each thread so you can go to the first thread you haven't seen, that would be a nice addition.

I'll have to see if that is module , a newer version of the BB or a totally different BB. I always just click the page icon next to the thread and it takes me to the last post that I saw in that thread automatically. I'll check it out though.

I'd support a new BB. This one is kinda limited in features, and the features it does have aren't all that good.

Well unfortunately, unless there are conversion packages to convert all the previous threads to a new db format, we are stuck with phpbb unless we want to lose all of our posts up to now. Since its one of the most popular BBs I don't think there is anything a an add-on can't fix if it is something we really want.

Upgrading to the newest version might give it a healthy refresh though.

I'll look around and see what other software has a convert feature. We can always set it up alongside the current software until it's fnished, and then move it over.

edit- my local mini site uses SMF, which does have scripts to convert from PhPBB. http://www.simplemachines.org. I know it's all modular, so you can add features easily.

I'll install it in a seperate folder and database so we can play with it.

Well this sucks, the site isn't transferred to the new system yet- we can't really get to the control panel anymore. It was supposed to be done already.

Well, for one thing with SMF we can have like what matt said. We can have a recent posts window, or a window of unread posts.

Not sure I'd be able to install anything at this point anyway, because i can't get into the site's admin area to make a new database table. Stupid crap is still in "transition."

I'll put it on my own webserver for now I suppose, to play with.

You can get to the panel, you just have to click around a bunch of times. I just did it to back up the current forum.

I think the forums fine, there are other things on the site that could use some messing with, but the forum serves its purpose well

ok got it- saabrally.com/smf

play around with it, tell me what you think. I'll screw around with it, add some modules, whatever. It's using a totally seperate database table from phpbb, so we're safe. i haven't imported any old database information, because well... i don't wanna screw with that unless we're really going to us it.

.

You can do that now, the link is called "view posts since last visit" in the upper right of the forum index...
