Sweden, Midnight Sun Rally 2009

Postby sonett » Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:06 am

Visited Sweden 17-20 July to attend the Saab festival at the museum and watch some stages of the Midnight Sun Rally. The friends we stayed with, just outside Trollhattan, were servicing for a few of the rally cars...

I love the service car, I've always wanted to build a replica service car for the team to use as a support vehicle at rallies. Having a nearly identical vehicle mechanically would certainly be handy, its a rolling parts department!

Just give us the keys to the old rally car and we can drive that around ;)

Good idea, I'll start working on a pedal drive system :)

Why not work on a propulsion system that uses a liquid fuel distilled from petroleum the enters the engine through a series of valves, and is ignited by a series of electronically controlled explosions that move a series of metal pistons in a repetitive cycle? I think we might be on to something!

Does a diesel have electronically controlled explosions?

Yep. The new ones are all electronic. And diesels are the only engines with explosions. If the gasoline in your mini starts exploding you have major issues.

I hope to one day compete in this event! I'm sure there are saab rally cars for rent if you know the right people. Very cool to see Stig still at it. I've always wanted to see him compete. He showed up in Oregon one year and won in a Subaru or something but I didn't attend, I had to work. Looking back I should have called in sick, or quit for that matter.

Stig drove Carl Merrill's old Escort Cosworth at Maine Forest Rally about 10 years ago. Jon Dennis got him to autograph one of the sun visors in his '76 EMS. It was especially funny because looking at him, Jon could be Stig's grandson :P
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off :eyebrows:
