2012 International Rally of the Lakes

Postby Geoff » Sat May 19, 2012 10:36 am

My wife and I went over to Ireland a few weeks ago. The first day we were there was the last day of the Rally of the Lakes, a pretty big tarmac rally based in Killarney, Ireland. We drove from the airport straight to Killarney and managed to get in position for the last stage.

Tarmac rallies don't always make for interesting photography (unless you know where the jumps or cuts are) but the scenery makes for some fun shots. This stage runs right along a harbor on the Atlantic ocean.

There were around 150 cars entered, many of which were the first time I'd ever seen "in the flesh" such as a Toyota Corolla WRC, Opel Manta, Lancia Stratos and a while list of other fun cars that we don't get in the US that I've seen on European roads, but not rallying (Citroens, Peugeots, Ford Pumpas, Toyota Starlets, MGs etc.)

This Stratos is part of the "Slowly Sideways" group made up of historic rally cars which run through the stages before the first competition cars at whatever pace they feel comfortable.

Before we went to the rally I saw an entry list that showed a 99 entered in the Slowly Sideways group, but I didn't see it at the rally.

The corner we spectated from had a diver in a boat in the harbor. You can see two little bodies in wet suits that look like they're attached to the center hay bale (wrapped in black plastic) in this picture. That's two guys in a raft waiting to pluck anyone out of the ocean...

The rally was a lot of fun. Some of it was similar to the way we do things in the US but there were a lot of minor differences that made things run much smoother. The whole atmosphere of the rally, mostly to do with the fans/followers, is much different than in the US.

We had a great time! Lots of WRC cars and nice historic cars too. Interestingly, the Subaru rally cars sound differently there than they do here.

I just ran across this video of Colin McRae running the event back in 2005 in a 310HP MKII Escort.

Some good external shots too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=iHDWBF7swFg&NR=1

The stage is "Molls Gap" which is run on the main road between Killarney and Kenmare and goes straight through Killarney National Park. We drove that road a few times during the rally and the day after (the stage road was re-opened for traffic between passes). What McRae did in 8:08 took us probably 20+ minutes in the rental car at an enjoyable speed. :P

It looks a bit like Targa Newfoundland, with the craggy hills and water in the background.

Hi All,

I just tripped across this post by accident, I was looking for information on the Killarney Historic Rally, which is 9 stages, held on this upcoming 1st December. So I thought that I would register and contribute to this fine thread.

You must have seen me pass, I was driving a white Audi Coupe Quattro in the Shell Oils / Audi Sport UK livery, as part of the Slowly Sideways Group (car B9).
As regards the Saab, you were unlucky not to see it, he retired on Stage 13 (second Cod's Head run) with a broken driveshaft, it's a nice, and very quick car.
Killarney is a superb rally, it has a number of iconic rally stages such as Molls Gap, Tim Healy Pass, Carragh Lake, Ballaghbeama, Cod's Head, and the very demanding Ardgroom. And the craic in the town at night is mighty too. And this year we had mainly good weather (some rain on the saturday).

If you have any more pictures of my car, and the other Slowly sideways cars, I'd appreciate it if you can post them up :)

If anyone is at the Historic at the start of December, or thinking about going to the Lakes next year (start of May), then feel free to drop me a line, both are great rally's, and well worth the effort of attending.

TIA, James

Hello Cornholio!
Image
Here is the only shot we got of your car
Ireland_2012 046.JPG

Neat car!
That photo was taken right after the whole Slowly Sideways group had to come to a stop and then restarted individually so we didn't get to see much speed.

Driving some of the roads (including roads used as stages) was pretty fun. I was trying to imagine what driving them at speed would be like. It would be nothing like the tarmac rallies I've done in the north eastern US. Our roads are much wider and much more straight.

And I finally came across a picture of the SAAB

Thanks for the photo :)

Found a picture of the same Car. I think that this was the start of SS9, Molls Gap, Sunday 6th May 2012.

As I said before, if anyone is across to the Killarney rallies, we'll probably be on the event, feel free to make yourselves known :)

Maybe I'll save up some money and in 10 years I can rent a car for the event :-)

A car for the event would cost you a pretty penny, as you'd have to insure it too...... Probably cost you €2-3k, and you'd need a service crew too......

I guess it would be cheaper to put a rally car in a container and ship it over and back for the event! There are a few Irish guys from the east coast of the US that do events in both the US and Ireland. I'm not sure how they do it (two cars, shipping, renting, etc.), but I heard at least one of them sent his car to Ireland recently with no intent on future US rallies.

2 to 3 k euros to rent a car or cover the insurance? If thats car rental that is cheap. Renting a bike for the safari was $18k to $25k with service.

I think €2-3k covered the insurance. Of course it depends on what kind of car.....
Service costs would be additional, I'd guess €5k would get you a competative spin for the weekend. You'd need an International License if you're not from Ireland
