LeMons 2014 NHMS

Grabbed one of the GoPro sections on Sunday. I saw the overall laps and lap time leader, the V8 Volvo #242 in the distance and made my way up the pack. I think I set the weekend lap record somewhere in this stint, but was then beat by a few hundreths by Kip Moncrief after me and then a wicked fast MR2 Turbo :luke:

Yeah the car runs very lean at/off idle and very rich under boost. Haven't been to the dyno yet to sort it out. What VW does your buddy run?

It's to keep people from being too hard on the trans..

I don't know, someone popped it off before my stint, didn't actually bother me too much.

The lack of the tachometer and the wires floating all around would bother me more than the lack of the shifter knob, I would be in there with some split loom, double sided tape and zip ties trying to "neaten up" if I were one of the technical directors on that project. I am just nit picking though, it sure does look like a blast to drive!

Is your trans cooler set up the same as last time? - with the power steering pump running it? I have been thinking about the sort of set up we are gunna need to use. Don't think we are going to do a P/S pump set up (we are keeping the P/S system), I am wondering if the stock C-900 Automatic trans cooler that the turbos have on the passenger side will have enough cooling capacity to use that alone, or if we would be better suited to run one of those really big front mounted automatic trans coolers that are appropriate for "large motor-homes"

Well the engine ended up being out of the car and the transmission still in pieces the day before the race..so some of the "cleanup" items did not get finished. The tach worked for a while...then it didn't. Didn't get to sort that out yet.

You say the trans was in pieces just before the event, but I haven't seen a build thread for this car (is there one?) But what do you do to make it last the punishment of 24 hour racing and how much torque are you putting through it. A relatively stock transmission lasting 24hours in a race car seems amazing to me with all the talk of glass transmissions.

thansk

Didn't update after the last race, but the synchros got all chewed up, so my team mates made me replace them

3 spare transmissions later, found enough parts to put it back together. Trans is a 91 5 speed. The transmissions seem to hold up fine as long as they are kept cool enough and you keep oil in them. That and not having 150k mile bearings in them. Being light and not too crazy on the boost also helps.

You should just remove all the synchros.
2 benefits:
A) No synchros to chew up
II) Team mates will have something that warrants complaint
