I recall someone telling me to watch out for the rotted rockers when I was looking at them. That was 20+ years ago.
I went and looked at one that had been stored in a barn since the late 70's. The shell was pretty clean, no rust. But the shell was sitting on stands, and it was full of boxes of parts, and had more boxes of parts piled on top of it. Even at 600 bucks for the whole lot, it was more of a project than I could have handled at the time. I think I may have been 17-18 and still didn't have a garage. I had to pass it up.
The one that started my 914 fascination had a body kit on it. Searching Google has me believing that it was a "Chalon" kit that was on it. Although I recall the front air dam was a little different. I also remember it having a lip spoiler on the tail. And BBS wheels.

Re: Other Hobbies / Interests
That is the nicest Chalon 914 I have ever seen. Sadly, many of them have been broken down for parts. What got my interest in 914s started was a kit car too, a 914/904 kit. A rent house I lived in as a kid had a 904 kit shell sitting at the back of the property. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. The crawlspace of the house held the rest of the car. I used to play with the Motolita wheel I found in the pile
You can still find deals like that with people just wanting to get out, though not as common as they used to be. 73/74 2.0 914s cars are considered the best of the 4 cylinder cars. The bumper tits on the 73/74s are ugly IMHO. Though slow in stock form, 914s are just way too much fun to drive. Like a go cart for grown ups.

I'll let him learn with the toy cars shown, but once he learns how to drive, then we can get the boy some cooler (faster) cars.

Shaping a new buck to reproduce HO scale Saab 900 slot car bodies on the vacuum former.
This is one of the new updated versions. It has the longer wheelbase for Super G-Plus cars, and will also fit Tyco cars. The earlier version was for the shorter wheelbase AFX cars.
I am nearing completion of a Saab 900 with more detail. And I have a Sonett in the works as well.

Re: Other Hobbies / Interests
I built this last winter just in time for 12-21-12.
If you have no interest in firearms, don't look...
I bought an un-built/unfinished Serbian M85 kit, replaced the 10" barrel w/ a custom 16", replaced the underfolder for an Ace side folder and added the StormWerks scope rail on top and the muzzle brake.
I need to redo a couple of the rivets and add a finish to the bare metal but it runs!
Serbian-American silliness at it's best!

Re: Other Hobbies / Interests
I was at a gun show recently...
After waiting 2 hours in a line that went across the parking lot, and about 200 yards up the road, you would get the impression that our second amendment rights were being threatened. Back in 99-00, when I originally got into guns, I paid 75.00 for 1000 rds of 7.62x39 ammo. Just bought another case of 1k... this time they cost 350.00. Seems brass and lead have outpaced silver and gold. I should have bought 100,000 rounds back then...
Love the new toy...

That came with a 10" barrel? It must have looked like an airsoft gun....

Re: Other Hobbies / Interests
Thanks! It was (is) a fun project.
16" is the minimum w/out a $200 Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) tax stamp. I bought a chrome-lined Bulgarian 16" and modified it to fit.

Cool. I like it. My brother is hunting for a Swedish Mauser, and I can't decide if I want to get into another hobby right now.

Buds Guns still has some M91's for $130....

I was just looking at Henry AR-7 22LR survival rifles this morning. The barrel, receiver, and two magazines fit into the waterproof plastic stock, and it supposedly floats both broken down and assembled. Weighs about 3 pounds. Looks like they can be had new for ~$250. I like it mostly because it's gimicky as much as any other reason.
