It depends, are we talking crushed for scrap or redeemable for deposit?

So, the idea right now is David is going to build up the white 99 with a T5'd turbo 16V engine (he already bought your flywheel kit), LSD, and dirt suspension and that'll be rallycross / fun street car, and I am going to finish the build of the yellow car to be an autocross / road race / fun street car, so we'll have more or less purpose configured 99's for both road and dirt racing.

So this would be for the rallycross (his) car. He priced out a Quaiffe too, and I am going to look into maybe modifying an early 9000 OBX knockoff diff or something and see if we could make a kitted way to install a more common diff into the C900 case.

Because neither of us has enough projects to be working on....

If the OBX 9000 is a knock off of the quaife unit, then it definitely should work. Did you find one somewhere? The only issue I ran into with the 9000 quaife is having to shorten one of the stub axles... so you can't use a standard "spare". I'll have to look into that.

The quaife for the 9000 was significantly cheaper from Abbott than the c900 one was. I think around $700 shipped. The gripper is definitely better for gravel, but I think for tarmac/street, the quaife might be better.

I haven't looked yet, just remembered that they were out there, and that the '91-'93 9000 housing is almost identical to the late C900 diff housing and has the same splines, so it seemed worth some research effort.

If you could let me know what you had to do with the 9000 Quaife I'd love to hear about it!

I just googled for 30 minutes without much luck. Only F35 or late 9000? OBX versions.

What I did, was to chop the nose off of a stock diff (where the speedo gear goes) and then turn down the top of the Quaife so that the nose could slip over. I might have opened up the nose on the inside as well to meet in the middle. It was not an interference fit, but with the carrier bearing pressed on, it did not move. I added some red loctite 271 for good measure. Then you have to shorten the stub axle on one side and turn down the diameter since it bottoms out inside the diff. It looks a little sketchy as you lose some of the splined area of the inner driver, but we raced on it and never had a problem. I'd say if we can find an OBX supply, it would definitely be worthwhile.

Cool. Thanks for the info.

So I thought the splines for the inner drivers changed for the '94-'98 9000's, but it looks like they use the same inner drivers from '90-'98, so maybe a later 9000 OBX could be machined to work - the ring gear spacing I think is what causes the problems? I have one out at the shop that I could measure and see if there's a simple-ish way to adapt them with some machine work.

Having access to a machine shop really makes projects like this less daunting.

I just picked up a 91 9000S transmission with a Quaife because I remember this thread talking about being able to modify a 9000 Quaife to fit a classic 900 transmission.

Hi Jon that was Jordan who is using a modified 9000 Quaife in eEURO'S "NORMA". I looked into it , but after going to Quaifes site and down loading the build drawings for both the 900 unit and the 9000, decided to buy the 900 unit and pay the price. Look the drawings over, they tell the story.

Gary, I have a 900 Quaife in one transmission that is my current build. An opportunity came up to purchase this one for $350. I thought that was a great price. So I don't mind doing a little work to make it fit.
The 900 one that I have was purchased from someone thru a group buy, they were originally $1100, I paid $900 for it.

That might have been the group buy I did with Scanwest some 10 years ago. If I recall we bought 15 units.

when I bought my one and only 900 Quaife , I paid about $1100 and waited about 3-4 months until it was built and in my hands. The lesson there was "plan ahead". I love my unit, it made a world of difference in my event times and exit speeds out of corners etc.
I have even good much quicker in taking it in and out as I break a trans here and there. All in the need for speed !
